One of the delights of visiting the Peak District is to enjoy walks centered around visiting pubs.  There are many pubs to choose from in the Peak District and both the holiday cottages, Valley View and Riverside House, are within easy walk or drive to some great pubs.

During our recent visit to the Peak District in January 2018 we visited some old favourites and reconnected with past haunts.  Here's our shortlist.

The George, Alstonfield

The new owners are delightful, friendly and welcoming.  They are keeping the tradition of excellent food, wine and beer going and are happy to welcome bookings from larger groups staying at Valley View holiday cottage.  There is a room to the side of the bar that can be booked along with a large stand alone room across the courtyard.

The Devonshire Arms, Hartington

There's always a friendly welcome here from the cheerful landlord.  We visited the walker's bar with our dog but there is also a larger dining room available.  The pub food is of a consistently good standard and the beer is always well liked by the beer drinkers in our group.

The Church Inn, Chelmorton

Another favourite of ours and ideal for guests staying at Riverside House holiday cottage.  Dogs are welcome in the bar area, the landlord is welcoming and the food is varied and good.  The rabbit pie special went down particularly well.

The Old Gate Inn, Brassington

It's been over 10 years since we paid this pub a visit and we regret not going back sooner.  A roaring log fire, great beer and excellent food and service makes this pub well worth a visit.  Dogs are welcome too.

Of course there are plenty of other lovely pubs to visit in the Peak District, and we can advise you when staying with us at our holiday cottages.  We've visited quite a few (all in a days work) so do ask us!

With recent new owners The Anglers Rest is becoming a great pub for walkers and locals alike.  Situated on the very beautiful river Wye (see picture) The Anglers Rest is just a stones throw from the Monsal Trail ideal for traffic free walking and cycling.

Our holiday cottage, Riverside House is only a mile away along the river too, so it is a great place for our guests to enjoy family and friends meals and celebrations.

We've eaten there a few times now with the new owners and are pleased with the food, beer, wine, friendly staff and the fact that dogs are made very welcome.  There's plenty of parking too.

If you are in the area we highly recommend popping in for a pint, a meal or to sit outside and enjoy the views of the river Wye.

The only way to experience your holiday cottage from the guests point of view is to stay in it.  That's not the same as being there and checking it out, you do need to stay there.

I've just come back from a few days at both Riverside House and Valley View holiday cottages in the Peak District.  And I've booked to stay there again in September.  Using up a few mid-week days doesn't cost me very much, but I get to find out a lot.

At Valley View I picked up that the velux black out blinds, which give a great nights sleep, were slightly out of kilter.  Once moved darkness was resumed.  I only saw that because I was lying in bed!

A few other little niggles like broken curtain hooks, a blunt snooker cue for the pool table, a wobbly kitchen door handle and teak oiling the outside bench were all dealt with over the few days.  Some things you just don't notice straight away.

At Riverside House the kindling was topped up (well it is the Peak District), the blunt scissors sharpened and pieces from the puzzles gathered together.  Whilst sitting enjoying the sun on the private patio we also noticed that a tree branch was overgrown and making too much shade, so we did some trimming too.

All these are little things, but add to the big picture.  These are things that the guest will experience and will notice.  They probably won't tell you, but unless you are living there, as a holiday cottage owner you won't pick up on these things.

So holiday cottage owners, go and treat yourselves to a couple of days away and experience the break from the guests angle.

After ten years of running Riverside House holiday cottage in the Peak District we have decided to do some major upgrades.  The holiday cottage will be closed for two and a half months while everthing is going on.

So what's happening?  First of all the whole kitchen has been removed and the tiles in both the kitchen and dining room are being replaced.  We are having underfloor heating put in both these rooms and then new flooring laid.  The hand-made wooden kitchen units are going to be rubbed down and re-stained and will look like new before they are refitted.  A new granite worksurface, taps and new applicances such as fridges, dishwasher etc are being installed.  Three of the exterior walls in the kitchen are being insulated which along with the underfloor heating should make this room very cosy indeed.

Whilst the kitchen is being done we are having acoutstic soundproofing put inbetween the kitchen and ensuite bedroom above to reduce noise levels.  We are also having new carpeting throughout all the upstairs bedrooms, hallway and stairs.

And finally the grass outside is going to be relaid and new pebbles added to the drive to finish everything off with a smart appearance, ready for the spring and outdoor dining and BBQs.

We think it is going to look great when it is all completed and it is an exciting way to be celebrating our 10th anniversary of running Riverside House holiday cottage.

In the meantime Valley View holiday cottage is available and we are taking bookings on both of the holiday cottages right through to 2017.  If you want to know more about the improvements to Riverside House holiday cottage or if you are interested in either of our holiday cottages please get in touch.

If you are staying at Riverside House holiday cottage, don't miss out on the foodie delights of Tideswell.  This town is growing in popularity and can now boast a wide range of cafes, delis, pubs and restaurants.

Here's a pick of our favourites and all of them can be found on our Out and About pages:

The Red Lion pub (although in Litton it is only a couple of minutes by car from Tideswell) is a lovely traditional Peak District pub with small cosy rooms and log fires.  Real ale, good wine and freshly cooked food in generous portions, and dogs are allowed in the front bar.  In the summer it is lovely to sit on the pub benches on the green and watch the world go by.

High Nelly's in Tideswell, is a modern, spacious cafe serving excellent food for breakfast or lunch, some of the best coffee we have had and with excellent service.  We had Derbyshire oatcakes with bacon and free range eggs, all locally sourced and delicious.

Vanilla Kitchen is another cafe that we know well and would recommend either for breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea.  Try the home made pies or cakes and there is a courtyard area which is ideal for walkers.  The cafe is dog friendly too.

There are several choices of pubs in Tideswell, including the Horse and Jockey, The George, The Star and on the outskirts of town The Anchor.  We would recommend all of them for good pub grub and we are hearing good things about the landlord's home made pies at The Anchor.

There's a new restaurant in Tideswell called The Merchant's Yard, which serves breakfast, lunches, a la carte in the evening and even cocktails.  Craft beers, good wines and Sunday roasts also on the menu.  There is a large room that can be privately hired and this would be ideal for guests of Riverside House to celebrate a special occasion.

And if you are looking to self cater at the holiday cottage, Tideswell boasts a butcher with locally sourced meat, a greengrocers (even open Sunday mornings), a deli with home made bread and far more (Tindalls of Tideswell) and The Peak District Parlour (a cafe and deli) with lovely local cheeses.

If you just want a good old fish and chip Friday night there are two chip shops in Tideswell, Corner Chippy and Elliott's Fish and Chips.

So in Tideswell you will be spoilt for choice for places to eat out, so why not take a look at this lovely Peak District town today!

It's starting to feel like Christmas at the holiday cottages now.  The trees are up and decorated and we have our Christmas tree in the village too at Litton Mill next to Riverside House.  This weekend I'll be visiting both holiday cottages to make sure everything is ready for our Christmas and New Year guests; topping up glasses, checking kitchen supplies generally, checking decor, making sure there are plenty of logs and kindling and just generally giving everything a once over.

We've already got bookings for Christmas 2016 at both holiday cottages for next year, but if you are looking for New Year 2016 these breaks are both available at Valley View and Riverside House.  And if you are thinking even further ahead we can take bookings for Christmas and New Year 2017 based on 2016 prices.

Spring is definitely in the air, and this is a lovely time of year in the Peak District.  There are many different varieties of wildflowers in the Peak District and you need to start planning to visit soon to start spotting them.

The first flowers to come out are usually the Wood Anemone, but my favourite in the Peak District are the orchids that can be seen in the limestone dales.  There are some rare varieties, including Frog Orchids and Burnt Orchids, but easier to spot are the Tansley Orchids (shown in the picture), and the Early Purple Orchids of Lathkill Dale.  If you stay at Riverside House holiday cottage visit the local dales and around Priestcliff and Miller's Dale and you will spot these and many more wildflowers.

Along the riverbanks and in the wild garden at Riverside House you will see Butterbur, which produces spiked red flowers. These plants will eventually produce huge rhuburb-like leaves and they do provide a great spectacle, even though they divide the crowds! Kids tend to love them!

There are plenty of other wildflowers to see including wild garlic on bloom (spiky white flowers and a very pungent smell, you can't miss it really), cowslips,  and some of the rarer ones to look out for are Nottingham Catchfly (see these in Miller's Dale near Riverside House holiday cottage), Maiden Pink (Bradford Dale), and Knotted Pearlwort (Monk's Dale).

Now the weather is colder we want all our holiday cottage guests to feel warm and homely when they visit us this winter.  Our boiler at Riverside House holiday cottage has just been serviced and the chimney swept so that both the boiler and log burner will be working at their peak to keep our guests warm.  We also offer an unlimited free supply of logs at both our holiday cottages, as well as supplying kindling, so you never have to worry about getting supplies for the log burners.

We are planning some major improvements at Valley View holiday cottage in January including easier to use heating controls for the boiler, better insulation to the walls of the Annex bedroom as well as a complete redecoration in the Annex bedroom, Annex hallway, new bathroom flooring in the Annex and a new front door to the Annex that will be a snug fit.  We are replacing some of the double glazed units throughout Valley View holiday cottage too and in March will replace the velux windows with new ones.  There will be new carpet in the main stairs and landing as well.

At our Peak District holiday cottages we realize the importance of keeping on top of things and in particular making improvements that will keep our guests warm and welcome in the winter season.

The Peak District is often at its prettiest in the winter months.  With fewer visitors and the scenery dusted with frost or snow, there's never a bad time to visit.  Here are a few things you should consider before you book a winter break:

  • What is the heating situation at your accommodation?  Some holiday cottages charge for heating, gas or firewood.  Make sure you know before you go.  At Riverside House and Valley View holiday cottages we include all heating in our prices and we also include an unlimited free supply of logs and kindling for the log fires too. Ideal for a cosy winter break!
  • Is your car winter ready? If you're travelling some distance, make sure you have checked your tires, got a few spare blankets etc.
  • Do you have the right footwear for walking in the snow?  What about clothing - no one wants to be wet and soggy all day!
  • Check that the attractions you wish to visit are open out of season.
  • Don't forget that it gets dark a lot earlier in winter - make sure you plan your walks accordingly and don't find yourself lost in the dark. At both our holiday cottages we provide outside lighting and torches in the cottages for you to use.

If you want incredible wedding pictures, what better backdrop than the Peak District?

Whether you want a small gathering, a large wedding, a country house affair or a stylish hotel do, there's something for everyone.

The Peak District Tourist board has compiled a list of amazing wedding venues from the stunning Chatsworth House to the National Brewery Centre.

Although Riverside House doesn't cater to stag or hen parties, we do offer an ideal solution for out of town guests attending the wedding.  With room for 9 guests, plus an additional 3 on pullout beds, there's room to get ready and relax after the festivities.
