Peakzip is a new zip wire experience in the Peak District National Park.  Located in private woods near Whaley Bridge, this is an experience not to be missed for the fun seeking, young at heart and anyone that wants a bit of an adrenalin rush whilst on holiday.

There are three different zip wires; the first, which is a warm up to get you going, is the Main Camp zip; the Flying Fox zip with a steep 50 metre plummet into a quarry bay and the Big Zipper a 50 metre crossing in the open air.  The whole experience will last approximately two hours with all equipment and an instructor provided and no prior experience is necessary.  An average level of fitness is required.

The zip wires are suitable for ages 10 and over and all under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. There is private free car parking and toilets provided.  Access to some areas maybe a little steep, but it is short and suitable footwear and clothing for the weather conditions are highly recommended.  In total 600 metres will be walked to access the zip wires.

Prices are £19 per person but group discounts are available for larger parties (6 plus) or private events.

Current dates available, which must be booked in advance:

28 and 29 July (this is the launch weekend with a 3 for 2 deal availble by contacting Peakzip and quoting 'VisitPeaks' for this offer)
2, 3, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 27, 28, 30 and 31 August
2 September

The Peakzip reopens in October after these dates.

Relax, recharge, have fun and getaway.  A few of the reasons why people choose a short break weekend away.  The Peak District National Park can offer plenty of opportunities to do all of these things and more.  Don't take our word for it though, here are some of the comments of past guests at our holiday cottages, who have enjoyed short break self-catering holidays with friends and family.

A weekend in Riverside House holiday cottage - 'walks from the door, past the babbling river, feeding the ducks, over the wooden bridge. We walked the Monsal Trail, loved the living local history there and visited the spa town of Buxton.'

A short break at Valley View holiday cottage - 'we hired bikes on the Tissington Trail, walked up the hill to a smart pub, along the river Dove (shown in the picture) to Ilam and Thorpe and had great fun crossing the stepping stones. We visited the market town of Ashbourne, saw water mills, water stones and mill stones- the kids loved it.'

So many things to do, so much fun to be had, so why not consider a break away and take time out for laughs, happiness, the great outdoors and just enjoying being away from it all.

Tideswell in the Peak District National Park is one of our favourite towns for a morning or afternoon visit and stroll.  It is home to the Cathedral in the Peak, (shown in the picture above) which is worth a visit, but it also has some great foodie delights.

Some of favourite cafes are High Nelly's, The Peak District Parlour and the recently acquired The Woodman (previously Vanilla Kitchen).

We have had one of our best breakfasts in High Nelly's with Derbyshire oatcake, free range eggs and local bacon.  A friendly and warm welcome and plenty of space for groups.  Dogs are welcome but on tables outside only.

The Woodman is run by H&D Exoctic Teas and you won't be disappointed.  Home baked cakes are paired with speciality teas; all with timers to get the perfect brew.  There is a bistro menu as well as tapas, Thai, Caribbean and on Thursdays takeaway curry.  We sampled the tapas and teas and we would highly recommend.  Dogs are welcome.

The Peak District Parlour is another great breakfast spot or perhaps for Sunday lunch.  There's also a deli section with cheeses and a good choice of deli items.  Light lunches, daily specials, fresh baked bread and home made ice cream all available.  This is a good dog friendly cafe too.

Don't miss out a visit to Tindalls of Tideswell famous for their pies, homemade bread, chutneys, cakes and much more!

Finally for a lunch or dinner we recommend The Merchant's Yard, which have also reviewed in our earlier blog.  Great food, craft ale and wine.

Riverside House holiday cottage our large holiday cottage is only a 40 minute walk away from Tideswell along the lovely Tideswell Dale or by car in just over 5 minutes.  There's plenty of parking on the main road.  For more information contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Did you know that the Peak District is Britains' first national park?  It was formally designated in 1951 after several decades of campaigning. It covers 555 square miles and includes the counties of Derbyshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire and Yorkshire as well as the urban fringes of Sheffield and Greater Manchester.

The Friends of the Peak District has published The Peak District Boundary walk, a book which takes you round the whole 190-mile edge and boundary of the Peak District National Park.

The book's walking routes run from the moorlands of the South Pennines to the limestone walks of the Derbyshire Dales.  The book also takes you to the edges of Sheffield, Oldham and into Staffordshire and Cheshire.

The book includes footpaths, tracks, lanes, old railway lines and a canal towpath with detailed route descriptions, maps and information about places of interest on the route.  There's a handy route planning section at the start of the book showing distances and ascents.

There's no need to walk the whole 190-miles in one go!  The book is designed for day walks as well as those who wish to complete the whole circuit!  The stages of the walk have been designed, where possible, to start and finish at locations convenient for public transport connections, car parks, toilets, local shops, cafes and pubs.

The Friends of the Peak District have campaigned for over 90 years to safeguard the Peak District and through Riverside House holiday cottage we at Visit Peaks are proud to be supporters.  If you love the Peak District National Park and want to support The Friends of the Peak District, click here for more information.

There are plenty of places for families with young children, wheelchair users and the less mobile to visit and enjoy within the Peak District National Park, so no one needs to miss out on visiting this beautiful place.

  • There are 64 miles of trails accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs, with parking spaces reserved for blue badge holders in many car parks
  • Accessible Countryside for Everyone has a list of the easy access walks, mobility areas and walks without gates and styles
  • We believe the Peak District should be available to everyone, which is why Riverside House has downstairs accommodation - a bedroom and bathroom - making sure the house is accessible to anyone who may wish to avoid stairs.
  • At Riverside House we can also provide a wheelchair ramp for the one step on the ground floor between the dining room and hall area
  • At Riverside House the entrance into the house from the drive is completely flat
