It’s never too late to start a new hobby or get fit.  Even for the less active hiring an electric bike in the Peak District National Park is a great way to enjoy the countryside.

On the traffic free Monsal Trail you can have a great day out.  From Hassop Station on the Monsal Trail you can hire electric bikes (book in advance) and the pedal assist makes for effortless cruising. My husband and I enjoyed setting the speed and level of assistance on the bikes which are easy to use and ideally suited to leisure users.

The bikes have an upright position offering the most comfort for cycling and even come with a handy basket to carry your essentials for the trip.  They are heavier than a conventional bike because of the battery but you can start in gear and with power assistance and once going they feel lighter and easy to pedal.

There is plenty of parking at Hassop Station plus once you have enjoyed a power assisted cycle the Hassop Station Café serves a delicious range of homemade food including locally sourced produce. There’s even a sun terrace, covered outdoor area, bookshop and gift area.

So if you want a silver biking day out in some glorious traffic free countryside why not try hiring an electric bike in the Peak District?

With recent new owners The Anglers Rest is becoming a great pub for walkers and locals alike.  Situated on the very beautiful river Wye (see picture) The Anglers Rest is just a stones throw from the Monsal Trail ideal for traffic free walking and cycling.

Our holiday cottage, Riverside House is only a mile away along the river too, so it is a great place for our guests to enjoy family and friends meals and celebrations.

We've eaten there a few times now with the new owners and are pleased with the food, beer, wine, friendly staff and the fact that dogs are made very welcome.  There's plenty of parking too.

If you are in the area we highly recommend popping in for a pint, a meal or to sit outside and enjoy the views of the river Wye.

Did you know that you can walk through railway tunnels on the traffic free Monsal Trail in the Peak District?  It is an ideal family day out with over 8 miles of the trail to discover.  As you can see from the picture the railway tunnels are lit and make great fun for kids.  There is cycle hire on the route including electric bikes, and the Monsal Trail is also ideal for a dog walk or a horse ride!  You can walk or cycle to Bakewell and in the other direction towards Buxton.

There are plenty of footpaths that you can take off the Monsal Trail too which will extend the walk to some of the Peak District's loveliest dales and valleys. Look out for wild flowers such as the rare Tansley Orchid.

Do stop off at the Monsal Viaduct to enjoy the views and after that some steep steps will take you to the Stable's Bar for a refreshing pint or two and some lovely food.  It's dog friendly too.

Our holiday cottage Riverside House is only a stone's throw from the Monsal Trail and many of our guests have enjoyed the traffic free route for walking and cycling in the Peak District.

There's all levels of walks in the Peak District, here we focus on an easy walk along the Monsal Trail that would be suitable for all abilities and ages.  It is a traffic free route of approximately 8 miles with easy access points along the route.  Bike hire is available and the Trail is ideal for family walks, dog walks (in busy months keep dogs on a lead) and horses are also welcome on the Trail.

The Monsal Trail in the Peak District is a level trail along the old railway running from outside of Buxton to Bakewell.  Now that the tunnels are open it is fun for the family to enjoy walking through them and enjoying a slice of railway history.  There are information points along the Trail providing insights into the life of locals and railways workers.

Along the Monsal Trail are easy access starting points, including the large car parking area at Hassop Station, with bookshop, cafe and a restaurant as well as cycle hire and outdoor eating areas for the good weather.  This would be a good point to start a walk for less able walkers or wheelchair users.

For guests staying at Riverside House holiday cottage the trail is accessed by crossing the bridge behind the holiday cottage and walking the short slope for a matter of 100 metres or so.  Once on the Monsal Trail you can walk in either direction to outside of Buxton or Bakewell (the longer walk about 6 miles).

Along the route to Bakewell you will enjoy panoramic views from The Monsal Viaduct and there is the option of stopping at The Stable Bar at the Monsal Head for lunch where dogs are welcome (please note the walk up to The Stable Bar is fairly steep).

Along the route in the direction of Buxton you can stop for a coffee at Blackwell Mill, which also has bike hire or visit the old station of Miller's Dale, complete with platforms, buildings, (including wc's) and in the spring and summer months a mobile cafe. There is car parking at Miller's Dale with easy access to the Monsal Trail, so another good point to start the walk for less able walkers.

Riverside House holiday cottage is only a stones throw from the Monsal Tail, and it is an ideal starting point for walking in either direction.

If you are visiting Riverside House holiday cottage with the family bike hire is available from Hassop Station and Blackwell Mill or bring your own bikes and use our secure double garage at the holiday cottage for bike storage.

If you enjoy The Monsal Trail, The Tissington Trail near our other holiday cottage, Valley View is also ideal for all abilities and families.
