Autumn is here and it makes us think of hot soups, steaming stews, spicy curries and warming desserts and cakes.

We love a bowl of roast butternut squash soup with crusty white bread, here's our tips for the best ever version!

  • Cut the pumpkin into wedges and deseed (no need to peel at this stage)
  • Roast in the oven with a drizze of olive or rapeseed oil
  • When soft and cooled down take off the skin
  • Add to a pan of already sauted and softened onions in butter
  • In a separate pan make a white or cheese sauce
  • Add some veg stock to the sauted onion and pumpkin
  • Add the white/cheese sauce
  • Wizz altogether for ultimate, rich pumpkin soup
  • Add salt and petter to taste
There's no better time to get cooking and creative than when on a self catering holiday break.  With the shorter days what could be better than spending an early evening cooking in a home from home kitchen with everything you need and loads of space?  Get together with friends and family for evenings of baking and cooking.

It feels as if summer may be coming to an end and the weather is a bit more autumnal.  In the Peak District things quieten down a bit and Autumn can be a lovely time to come and visit for a short break or longer if you are lucky to have the time.

One of our favourite things to do in the Peak District in the Autumn is to visit The Monsal Trail.  This is a traffic free stretch of former railway line running from Bakewell to outside of Buxton.

There's a great bike hire option at Hassop Station, with electric bikes too, as well as a cafe, book and gift shop and plenty of parking.  If you start from here we suggest heading in the direction towards Buxton and you can cycle through several railway tunnels and stop at the Monsal Head Viaduct to enjoy stunning views (see the picture above).  A refreshment pit stop is also available at The Stable Bar at the top of the Monsal Head, but it is a steep walk up, so note with bicycles it could be tricky.

If you happen to be staying with us at Riverside House holiday cottage, The Monsal Trail is only a short walk across the river Wye at the back of the cottage and up a small slope to access the Trail.  If you are feeling fit and energetic walk all the way to Hassop Station, or even Bakewell and back.  Allow a few hours and extra time to wander around Bakewell.  Or simply enjoy a stroll in either direction from Riverside House holiday cottage to take in the industrial heritage such as lime kilns, railway tunnels and some stunning vistas.

The Monsal Trail is ideal for dog friendly walks as it is traffic free and in the Autumn there are less cyclists and walkers on the Trail.  If you pick the right time early in the morning or later in the day it can almost feel as if you have the place to yourself.

We have some limited availability this Autumn at Riverside House holiday cottage so if you want to take a short break and enjoy The Monsal Trail why not get in touch?  Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

A short break or weekend in the autumn is perfect for getting out in the countryside and being active.  In the Peak District there are plenty of walks and cycle routes (some traffic free) that are ideal at this time of year.

Our favourite has to be The Monsal Trail, a stretch of traffic free walking or cycling that runs from Bakewell, via the stunning Monsal Head viaduct to a couple of miles outside of Buxton.  It is about 8 miles long in both directions and there are three tunnels along the route to provide a reminder of our railway heritage.  All the tunnels are open to the public as part of the trail.

The Monsal Trail is suitable for all ages and all abilities.  For young children and families pick a stretch of the trail around Hassop Station so that you can enjoy the flat walks or hire cycles which come in all sizes.  At Hassop Station there's plenty of parking, cycle hire (including electric bikes), a cafe, restaurant, shop, bookshop and outdoor seating.

For groups of friends we suggest a trip both ways with bikes or on foot at least half the trail is possible or more.  There are also plenty of walks leading off the trail if you want to extend the walk.  For keen cyclists and moutain bikers it is possible to use the trail to link up to other tracks and routes and enjoy a full day out.

For walks with dogs The Monsal Trail is ideal for off the lead walks, but do bear in mind that at popular times of the year it can be busy with cyclists so you do need to keep an eye on your dog.

For those who are older or mobility impaired we suggest joining the Trail at Miller's Dale, where there is parking and flat, level access onto the Trail in both directions.

If you want to get out and about and get active in the Peak District this autumn, why not try The Monsal Trail? Our holiday cottage, Riverside House is only a stone's throw from the Monsal Trail too!

There's an autumn chill in the air and the nights are drawing in.  But there's still plenty to love on a holiday cottage break away.

At both our holiday cottages, Riverside House and Valley View we have lovely log fires and what's more we provide an unlimited free supply of logs.  You can snuggle up to the log fire at any time of the day or evening!  After a long walk in the Peak District countryside there's nothing more welcoming than a warming log fire.

At Riverside house holiday cottage we also have underfloor heating in the kitchen and dining room, so you'd be even more warm and toasty! Both holiday cottages have been insulated too so although large they won't feel chilly.

If you are free to holiday outside of the school terms why not take a look at our mid-week deals for November and December and grab a cosy autumn bargain at our holiday cottages?

There's mid-week breaks at both Riverside House and Valley View holiday cottages, sleeping from 9 to 15 in four to six bedrooms.  At only £699 or £799 for four nights that's great value.  And don't forgot the logs for the log fire are completely free!

When you are staying in a holiday cottage rental over the autumn and winter months, you want to be sure that you will be cosy and snug. You can be assured that we will do our best to make your out of season stay as warm and homely as possible.

At both our holiday cottages we supply free, unlimited logs for the log fires.  We also include kindling and matches so you can get the fires burning quickly.  And rest assured every year we have the chimneys swept and checked so that they are in tip top condition.

We hope that by spending that bit extra on insulating our cottages to keep the cold out that our guests feel warm at all times.  The heating is included in the costs so there's no need to worry if there are younger or older family members to keep warm.  There is continual hot water too, so you don't need to worry if you feel like a bath after a long walk.

With the weather a bit colder and wetter outside, many guests like to cook in the holiday cottages enjoying family and friends meals together.  Both the kitchens at the holiday cottages are extremely well equipped with everything you need to cook large meals and we even have some cookery books available for inspiration.  We supply plenty of cutlery, pots, trays, glasses and even tins for cake baking if you get the urge!

I guess I've got that Halloween feeling, which means that this week the blog is about autumn dishes for a self catering holiday cottage break.

At our holiday cottages, Riverside House and Valley View the kitchen's are really well-equipped so that you cook almost anything.  We've even got blenders for hearty soups and cake tins for something sweeter.

Talking of soups why not try a roasted pumpin soup?  It's so simple, no need to peel the pumpkin, just cut into sections, roast until soft, remove skin.  Meanwhile gently sweat onions and other veg that you have to hand, add roasted pumpkin, vegetable stock and blend.  There you have it, my simple, speedy and tasty autumn pumpkin soup!

Other easy dishes for a large self catering group would be hearty casseroles - meat or veg, curries, hot pots, baked potatoes, roasted vegetables and for desserts try baked apples, crumbles or a wicked chocolate sponge!

I'd love to hear your easy self-catering recipies and tips.
